Day 5 - 30th July 2013

Athletics and football highlights from Sofia

Welcome to our highlights of Day 5 at the Deaflympics!

Women's Football

A crucial match took place today for GB Women's football team who were playing against Germany.

Both teams were in the same group and went into the match on the same number of points. If their game had ended in a draw, it would have fallen to the referee to flip a coin to decide which team would be going through to the semi-finals.

However, GB won through, with the final result: GB 2 -1 Germany. GB will now play the semi-final against USA on Thursday.

Team captain, Damaris Cooke said: "Today is the same day when England beat West Germany in 1966! I'm so excited! It was a battle and not without drama as a penalty was involved! I'm really thrilled! I'm welling up! Yes!"

Today was the start of the Athletics events. Melanie Jewett, who won bronze in the Marathon, competed in the 10,000m, finishing 6th with a time of 43:07.78.

Melanie Jewett said: "It was really good, really good. I was so pleased to finish… and not come last as well. My legs were tired from the marathon. This leg was very tight, very tight but I am pleased. It got harder and harder and I got slower and slower but I did it and I am really pleased!"

The track was humid and very hot, with several of the runners collapsing. Ambulances made their way onto the running track to take care of the athletes and proceedings stopped for a while.

After the delay, Lauren Peffers won her 400m semi-final as the third fastest qualifier with a time of 58:26.
