In his acceptance speech – you can see a short clip of it in our BSL video – Charlie said, “I’m very honoured and thankful to win this award. Deaf culture is amazing. Deaf people are amazing. The best, most direct, most beautiful people. Writing a sketch show in sign language, about Deaf life, and going on to direct it, was a lifelong dream for me.”
He also thanked his wife Joanne, the crew, Juggle Productions and BSLBT. Finally, he dedicated the award to the Deaf Funny 1 actors, who he is very proud of, because they inspired him so much and gave him “everything they had”.
Kerena Marchant, BSLBT’s Head of Content, said, “You sit at the awards and see a clip from Victoria, then Sign Fit from Deaf Funny and then the gritty Ackerly Bridge, and think –BSLBT is up there with the best! And then Charlie wins it! What an amazing time for Deaf programme making.”
Many congratulations, Charlie, from all of us at BSLBT!
