Melanie Jewett has given the British team an encouraging start at the 2013 Deaflympics by winning their first medal of the games!
Jewett won a bronze medal for finishing third in the marathon on Sunday 21st July. She can be seen crossing the finishing line in the YouTube video below!
The marathon was held in Germany in advance of the main games in Sofia, and in winning a medal and setting a personal best time for the marathon, Jewett achieved two of her aims for the games, which she talks about in her video profile (see right).
Her success will be a major confidence boost for Jewett ahead of the 10,000m, which she is also competing in, and should also encourage other British athletes to continue the medal-winning streak.
The women's marathon was won by Switzerland's Jaqueline Keller, while the men's race was won by Kenyan Daniel Kiptum, with his compatriot Peter Torolitch in second place.
For more video profiles, go to our Deaflympics site. A new profile is being posted every day before the games begin on Friday 26th July. After that, we will have daily video highlights and two programmes, broadcast on the 5th and 12th August, featuring all the action from the games!
