Black Lives Matter Statement

The British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust, as a charity created to deliver television programmes in British Sign Language, is engaged in challenging the exclusion of the Deaf people in society. We recognise the long, continuing history of discrimination against Black people and we too stand against racism in all its forms and in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

We have been reflecting on the diversity of our organisation and our content. We are committed to representing the whole of the Deaf community and to providing a range of programmes and voices that truly reflects the diversity of the community, the different lived experiences of those within it, and the ways in which different forms of exclusion can intersect.

We want to see more Deaf Black and minority ethnic people involved throughout BSLBT, and also in the production companies and among the talent we work with.

What are we doing?

We will review our existing data to establish a baseline.   We will work in partnership with Deaf people from across the community to develop an action plan for increasing the diversity of our people:
•    on our Board
•    on our staff
•    in our television programmes, working with production companies
•    in our online communications and video content

This message will remain on our website. We will post the action plan when it is ready and we will provide updates on our progress.

28th June 2020.
