  • Amazing!
A Sit-Com involving stock characters in the Deaf World.
The humor seems to come from both Deaf and Hearing Worlds, and from the comical interactions between Deaf and Hearing worlds.
Interesting is that the acting style is wholly Brechtian, I would say exaggerated Brechtian. This acting style is opposite to the Stanislavskian one that actors in movies employ. In the Brechtian style, actors show how certain characters behave without themselves abandoning their selves, while the Stanislavskian actors immerse in the role of the characters, abandoning themselves wholly.
I am indeed very surprised that the development of the script is done through improvisations.  It looks like the episode is coherent, as if scripted by a sole writer.

  • Fantastic sitcom film! Brilliant acting and the story leaves you wanting more. It definitely feels like a sitcom with all the camera works. Very believable which is excellent. The actors is likeable which is very good for a sitcom film because it keeps the audience in. Very well done to all involved in the production. Give yourself a pat on the back.

Please, PLEASE make more of this! I would definitely tune in every episode. It'll be nice to have a deaf sitcom on the web/TV.

    With regards,

  • It gets better and better as the new characters arrive. After 30 minutes, really want to know what happens to these characters next, so don't stop now! Great to see humour from deep inside Deaf culture. (But please remember - the actors may know each other, and so can sign in a very relaxed way, but the audience don't know them. So it takes a while to get used to their style/signs - example, Mario brother, no way to get this from just 'M'. If your statistics show how many people use the subtitles, that may warn you to sign more info sometimes?)

  • Hello!

I am a huge fan of your BSL Zone, and I live in Madison, Wisconsin. I try to keep up with the new videos you post, and was surprised that I could NOT open "Small World". Can you tell me why this is not possible in our country?

Keep up the great work you guys do at BSL Zone, and I'm jealous!!! Wish we had something like that in OUR country. Grrrr.

Maybe I should just move to England so I can work at BSL Zone! Grinning...

  • This a brilliant sitcom with so much potential!

Enjoyed it so much especially David Sands' incredible acting.

My eldest son has watched it four times so far! He recognised some actors from Sign Circle performances.

Adam Bassett's character is funny but important too! His 'correct' sign for Leeds is inaccurate, in fact, the thumbs should be 'tucked in'. Not to be confused with the sign for Exeter.

More episodes please and can we have more female Deaf actresses to balance it out.

    Thumbs up!

  • Absolutely brilliant programme. To begin with, it fills a huge gap in the British Deaf media world - which is currently filled with drama and factual programmes. A sitcom is an exciting, new genre and one which is largely relevant to the Deaf community itself. The characters are absolutely fascinating - Adam Bassett and David Sands do a brilliant job portraying particular facets of the Deaf community without being too stereotypical. The style and cinematography is brilliant. The story and plot line evolves in a way which is exciting to see.
The quibbles of Small World are minor in comparison. Perhaps it would have been interesting to have more awkward applicants to move in - which could be a great plot device - considering the Deaf world is so small, some of the humour doesn't seem to work, a little bit more backstory regarding the characters might enable a deeper connection between the viewer and characters.
Even so, the programme itself is absolutely great and an exciting development in Deaf media. In other words, make more of Small World please!

  • Even from this one programme, I predict the following:
    - 'Twelve Monkeys' will enter our lingo... (But the coded warning it's meant to give will FAIL as we will corpse with laughter at the memory and connection)
    - Deaf funerals will, from now on, ask the question "is the interpreter fake?"
    - The signing police may learn to be more circumspect with their 'corrections' as it's a much better way of getting the message across.
    - Future explanations of BSL will change from "It's a visual gestural language" to "It's like a man on the bridge, innit it?"
    - No more Jo/Joe. Every hearing student of BSL will henceforth be known as
    'J-E-N-N-I-F-E-R'.
    - Interpreters, CSWs, Communicators, note takers and the like will be known as 'Helpers' - a badge they will wear with pride as it will mean acceptance by the hearing world of the important work they do.
    - The writers may find themselves with fewer friends as people will not want their traits and issues observed for highlighting in future. Or, conversely, they may have more friends as everyone wants a piece of the action or to weirdly say, "See that, that's based on me!"
    Congratulations to all concerned.

  • I think this was an amazing show to broadcast for deaf and hearing people. I have two children who are teenagers- one is deaf and one is hearing and they watched this together with their mates and the hearing kids were laughing as much as the deaf kids! I was so proud! The humour is great and the character Chris is very funny- actually all the characters are. I especially liked that it showed deaf people as being 'real' people and not as superheroes or as people to feel sorry for- good that someone was making a joke about Laura being a helper and also the level 1 student (my name is J-E_N etc). Also good cultural reference jokes about the well-known people in the deaf community- (we actually started a discussion about who those people are after the programme!) and also a funny reference to the fake interpreter.

I hope to see more- this stuff is so important to see - real humour and not a one-off!

    Thank you BSLBT.

I am deaf myself and I can sign, but I am willing to use some inspiration. This show is my new inspiration. The language is very calm and I can tell they are having a conversation, not over the top like poem, monologue etc. I must say the setting and camera works is amazing, I can see the sign really clear. Bravo to the actors and actresses, I hope there will be a new series of this show! :D
