Day 9 - 3rd August 2013

Football and Tennis from Sofia

Transcript:

Hello! Jane here! Welcome to the highlights of Day 9!

Tennis

Today we went to watch Catherine Fletcher in the Women's Singles Bronze medal match against France.

It was such bad luck that Cathy had to withdraw due to injury. She had treatment then returned to play in the Mixed Doubles with her husband Lewis Fletcher for a third chance of Bronze against France.

Result: Catherine Fletcher and Lewis Fletcher lost in two sets.

Catherine Fletcher said: "The fact that this is my fifth Deaflympics – I have been doing it a long time so… I did come in to this tournament thinking it would be my last one and I think I will stand by that."

Bad luck! Hope you recover from your injury, Cathy!

Football

Now to Women's Football where team GB were up against Poland, with the winners taking home the bronze medal.

Result: GB Women beat Poland on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Captain Damaris Cooke said: "I'm on top of the world! It's been a real roller-coaster of a game! We had the heat! The doubts - we couldn't do it, then we could, then we couldn't. A real mix of emotions but we did it! The culmination of three years hard work! Yes!"

Coach Mark Gill: "We got Bronze! Yes! Yes! Yes!"

Manager Chris Gwynn said: "Yeesssss!"

Yay! A great result for the GB Women's Football team! If you want to see more of the match, watch the second of our two-part Deaflympics special which will be shown on television and here on the website next week.
